Joe is a co-founder of Palantir, a multi-billion dollar global software company best known for its work in defense and finance. Most recently, he was a founding partner at Formation 8, one of the top performing private funds and the precursor to 8VC. Together, these funds manage a total committed capital of over $3.5 billion. Before that, he founded Addepar, which has over $2 trillion managed on its wealth management technology platform, and OpenGov, which modernizes various processes for over 2,000 municipalities and state agencies. He is also a founder of Affinity, Anduin and Esper. Previously, Joe was an early executive at Clarium Capital, which he helped grow into a large global macro hedge fund. He also worked with PayPal while he was at Stanford.
Joe received a BS in Computer Science from Stanford in 2003. He often lectures and writes on entrepreneurship, technology and public policy.
He is also a founding Board Director of Affinity Technologies, an early stage enterprise software company. Previously Drew was a partner at Formation 8. Before that he served as chief of staff to Joe Lonsdale.
Drew serves on the Competitiveness Council for Cerberus Capital Management. He is also a Trustee to LivingOnOne, a non-profit impact production studio; WeAreThorn, a NGO which leverages technology to eliminate child trafficking; and the Claremont McKenna College Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship.
Prior to joining 8VC, Alex was a Partner at Formation 8. Alex has also worked with Peter Thiel as a Principal at Mithril Capital Management, a growth-stage venture fund, where he helped lead investments in AppDirect, C2FO and Helion Energy.
Preceding his venture career, Alex worked as engineer and early-product advisor at Clarium, Palantir, and Google. He was an early member of the Clarium Capital quantitative engineering team (with Joe Lonsdale) and close advisor/collaborator with the early Palantir team; advising on product design and contributing to the product. At Google Research, Alex worked on Google Street-Views before and during launch. Preceding Street-Views, also at Google, he worked on the development and launch of the Google Checkout product.
Prior to 8VC, Jin-Young was an early team member at Formation 8. Previously, Jin-Young worked at General Atlantic, a global growth equity firm, where she focused on investment opportunities in enterprise technology. Prior to GA, Jin-Young began her career in technology investment banking at Morgan Stanley.
Jin-Young received a B.A. in English Literature from Amherst College and an M.B.A. from The Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania with concentrations in Entrepreneurial Management, Marketing and Operations.
Jake is a serial entrepreneur who has spent his life building and scaling companies. Prior to launching 8VC, he co-founded Humin (Acq. Tinder/IAC), a consumer mobile software company where he built the engineering team and led growth. Jake also co-founded The Kairos Society, where he sits on the Board of Directors. While in college, he founded Solé Bicycle Co. (Acq.) and grew it into an industry leader. Most recently he co-founded Operation Masks with partner Drew Oetting to help bring PPE to medical workers on the front line of the fight against COVID-19. Jake serves as an advisor and board member to a wide range of companies and non profits.
Jake graduated form the University of Southern California in 2011, where he has been lecturing on entrepreneurship and technology for the last decade.
Ms. Scotti serves on the Advisory Board of Venture for America, the Board of Directors for Breakout Foundation and on the Senior Advisory Committee to Cornell Tech at Cornell University.
Ms. Scotti graduated with a degree in Production Management; Fashion & Related Industries as well as Advertising & Marketing Communications from The Fashion Institute of Technology.
Francisco previously was the Resident Data Scientist at Formation8 Partners where he worked with portfolio companies to strategize, prototype, and recruit for data products. He was the founder of Catenus Science, a data science consulting and recruiting firm that used an apprenticeship model to help early stage companies build data science teams.
Francisco received his Ph.D. from Stanford in Biomedical Informatics, where he was a Ruth L. Kirchstein Fellow. His research focused on clinical decision support for Radiology which won him the Martin Epstein award for best paper at the American Medical Informatics Association in 2014. He was the commencement speaker for the Stanford School of Medicine in 2015.
Prior to that he got his B.S. in Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences from UC Berkeley while doing research in Parkinson’s disease at UCSF.
After his operator career, Alex invested in over 20 seed-stage companies. Alex graduated from Stanford University in 2005 with a BA in Economics.
Prior to joining 8VC, David completed his Ph.D. in Biomedical Informatics at Stanford University, where he concurrently received an M.S. in Statistics. His research focused on the development of statistical and machine learning approaches for analyzing genomics data, and the characterization of epigenetic changes associated with aging in T cells.
Previously, David was a Bioinformatic Analyst at Einstein College of Medicine, where he worked on the genetics of aging and human disease. He performed his undergraduate studies in Computational Biology at Brown University.
Prior to 8VC, Sebastian spent over 4 years at Palantir where he was responsible for growing the commercial healthcare business and helped numerous insurance, pharmaceutical, and provider clients solve their hardest data analysis problems. He additionally served as an independent consultant to several health IT startups, advising on product and commercial strategy. He began his career as an analyst at Mithril Capital Management and at Breakout Labs.
Sebastian often writes on health policy and his work has been featured on Axios. In his spare time, Sebastian also conducts nutrition research at Stanford and has served on the board of Learning Unlimited, a Cambridge, MA education nonprofit where he remains active.
Sebastian completed a year of the MD program at Stanford University and holds a BS and MS, magna cum laude, in Molecular Biophysics & Biochemistry from Yale University. Sebastian is originally from Andover, MA.
Prior to 8VC, Lauren was the CEO of Roam Analytics, an NLP software platform for healthcare that was acquired by Parexel International. Previously, Lauren spent almost 7 years at Palantir leading teams in healthcare business development, product development, and internal operations. Prior to Palantir, Lauren was an early member of Google Health, management consultant, and life sciences private equity investor.
Lauren received an M.B.A. from the Stanford Graduate School of Business and graduated cum laude from Princeton University with an A.B. in Molecular Biology and a certificate in the Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs.
Previously, Wesley was a Senior Associate of Business Strategy & Operations at Celmatix, a healthcare technology company operating at the nexus of genomics and big data, with a particular focus on therapeutics for reproductive health conditions. Wesley currently serves as a member of the Board of Directors and Vice President of Harvard Alumni in Healthcare and was an Executive Board Member of the Leadership Institute of Harvard College.
Wesley graduated from Harvard College, receiving his AB degree, cum laude, in History & Science. Wesley is originally from Los Angeles, CA
Prior to her time at 8VC, Isabela worked with the Curtis Group of Graystone Consulting, an investment consulting division of Morgan Stanley which delivers objective and practical advice to select institutional and high-net-worth clients.
Isabela received a BA in Economics from Stanford University, where she was actively involved in Stanford Women in Business and The Stanford Institute for Economic Policy Research.
Prior to joining 8VC Jack worked in McKinsey & Company’s Moscow office, where he focused on strategic projects for both consumer and enterprise focused customers.
Jack graduated from Stanford University, receiving his B.S. in Management Science & Engineering. Originally from Moscow, Russia, Jack has spent extensive time living in other countries, including spending five years in England prior to attending Stanford.
Prior to joining 8VC, David was a research associate at the Broad Institute where he developed new methods for viral diagnostics and sequencing that were published in Nature and Nature Biotech. Previously, David built proactive recommendation engines as a machine learning engineer at Facebook Reality Labs, and worked on deep learning models for protein design at Harvard Medical School.
David graduated from Harvard University, magna cum laude, where he studied Computer Science and Biology. Originally from Seattle, Washington, David spent several years living in Vancouver, Canada and Seoul, South Korea.
Previously, Sam was first a Data Scientist and then a Senior Product Manager at Uber, building the algorithms and systems that power Pricing & Incentives for Uber’s Rides Marketplace. Before that, Sam was on the Growth team at Credit Karma, helping to scale the platform to 100mm+ members in the US, UK, and Canada.
Sam graduated from Dartmouth College, receiving his AB degree in History. Sam is originally from San Francisco, CA.
Before joining 8VC, Philip was an investment associate at Bridgewater Associates. At Bridgewater, he led research projects in the macro space and designed new equity trading systems.
Philip graduated from Stanford, where he studied Management Science & Engineering and Computer Science with a focus in the national security innovation space. He continues to advise the Hoover Institution on these topics.
Ian received a J.D. from Boston College Law School and an A.B. in English from Princeton University.
Prior to 8VC, Nathan was a Senior Manager in PwC’s Asset Management Practice based in San Francisco. Nathan worked with a range of financial services clients, with a focus on alternative asset managers.
Nathan received a MAcc and B.S. in Accounting from the University of Oregon. Nathan is a CPA.
Stacey has a broad range of experience working with both regional and multi-national financial institutions. Prior to 8VC/Formation 8, Stacey worked in PwC’s Asset Management Practice based in both San Francisco and Hong Kong. Stacey has extensive knowledge and experience working with Advisors, Managers, Hedge Fund, Private Equity and Venture Capital organizations across a diverse range of asset classes.
Stacey received a B.S. in Business Administration with a concentration in Accounting from Sonoma State University. She earned her CPA and is a member of the AICPA.
Prior to her time at 8VC, Allison worked in investor relations and business development at The Blackstone Group, one of the world’s leading investment firms. Previously, she focused on corporate development and internal strategy at Bloomberg. Allison began her career in investment banking at Merrill Lynch, where she specialized in the consumer staples sector.
Allison is a graduate from Penn State University, where she received her bachelor’s degree in finance.
Caroline received her B.S. in Business Administration with a concentration in Finance from The University of the Pacific.
Danielle graduated from University of California, Los Angeles with a Bachelor of Arts in Business Economics and a minor in Accounting. She is a CPA and a member of the AICPA.
Nichole graduated from the University of San Diego with a Bachelor of Arts in Accounting and a Master of Science in Accountancy and Financial Management. She is a CPA and member of the AICPA.
Joel graduated from the University of Texas at Austin with a Bachelor of Business Administration and a Master in Professional Accounting. He is a CPA and a member of the AICPA.
Her philanthropy work involves helping alleviate local hunger issues at the San Francisco Food Bank.
Robin received her B.A. from UCLA in Japanese Language and Linguistics.
Prior to 8VC Luke was a designer for Camino. Before that Luke spent 2 years as a designer for OpenGov, an 8VC and Andreessen Horowitz portfolio company which is the leading cloud-based financial analysis platform for governments.
Luke is also an accomplished artist. His work has been featured by Lululemon Athletica, Adobe’s Inspire Magazine, and Grafik Design Academy’s yearly magazine.
Luke holds a B.S. in Business Marketing from The Master’s University.
Sara Enberg graduated from the University of Nevada with concentrations in International Affairs and Spanish Literature. She is trilingual and continues to be most inspired by the impact and innovation of tech.
Prior to 8VC, Danielle managed operations for a podcast network startup and worked for Chick-fil-A cultivating brand growth. Danielle received her B.S. in Hospitality Management with a concentration in Event Management and Business Administration from Ole Miss. She utilizes her background and passion in Hospitality to ensure every interaction from 8VC is welcoming.
Prior to 8VC, Francesca worked at Apple managing and aggregating data for the launch of the new Apple TV app. Previously, she worked at Facebook where she monitored and analyzed metadata, including presenting findings to key executives.
Francesca holds a B.A. in Environmental Studies with minors in Cultural Studies and German from Franklin University Switzerland. Traveling and listening to people’s stories continues to enrich her life. In her spare time, she creates floral arrangements for weddings and other events.
Executive in Residence
Prior to joining 8VC, Justin served as Chief Customer Officer of YRC Worldwide (Nasdaq:YRCW). He had responsibility for deploying technology and logistics solutions to improve the customer experience. Justin also served as president of Logistics Planning Services and LP Projects International, which successfully sold in 2017. Hall currently owns Cardiff Ventures, an early stage investment company located in Minneapolis.
Justin graduated from the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, Minnesota with a B.A. in Entrepreneurship and is Scrum Master Certified. While there he participated in the school’s football and track programs. Since 2015, Hall has been a member of the Children’s Masonic Hospital Business Advisory Board and the board of directors of UST Schulze School of Entrepreneurship.
