Joe Lonsdale is a founding partner at 8VC, a San Francisco-based venture capital fund. He serves on several boards including Addepar, OpenGov, Oscar, Illumio, Radius, Hyperloop-One and Wish.

Joe is a co-founder of Palantir, a multi-billion dollar global software company best known for its work in defense and finance. Most recently, he was a founding partner at Formation 8, the precursor fund to 8VC, which manages over 1.5 billion USD and is one of the top performing private funds. Before that, he founded Addepar, a leading wealth management technology platform, and OpenGov. Previously, Joe was an early executive at Peter Thiel’s Clarium Capital, which they grew into a large global macro hedge fund. He also worked with the financial arm of PayPal while he was at Stanford.

Joe received a B.S. in Computer Science from Stanford in 2003. He often lectures and writes on entrepreneurship and technology.

Drew Oetting

Drew focuses primarily on enterprise and consumer software investments.

He is a founding Board Director of Affinity Technologies, a stealth enterprise software company. Previously Drew served as chief of staff to Joe Lonsdale (Formation 8 Founding Partner). Drew serves as an Adviser to LivingOnOne, a non-profit impact production studio and WeAreThorn, a NGO which leverages technology to eliminate child trafficking.

Drew graduated with degrees in Mathematics and Economics from Claremont McKenna College. He was a Robert Day Scholar, two-time Bill Gates Investment Asset Management Fellow, CEO of the Student Investment Fund and served on the Board of Trustees. In college he played varsity golf and sang in a professional a capella group. Drew is originally from Iowa City, Iowa and enjoys tennis, golf, basketball, snowboarding, philosophy.

Alex Kolicich

Alex Kolicich is a member of the investment team focusing on IT investments.

Prior to joining 8VC, Alex was a Sr. Partner at Formation 8. Alex has also worked with Peter Thiel as a Principal at Mithril Capital Management, a growth-stage venture fund, where he helped lead investments in AppDirect, C2FO and Helion Energy.

Preceding his venture career, Alex worked as engineer and early-product advisor at Clarium, Palantir, and Google. He was an early member of the Clarium Capital quantitative engineering team (with Joe Lonsdale) and close advisor/collaborator with the early Palantir team; advising on product design and contributing to the product. At Google Research, Alex worked on Google Street-Views before and during launch. Preceding Street-Views, also at Google, he worked on the development and launch of the Google Checkout product.

Jake Medwell

Jake focuses on software investments in both the consumer and enterprise space. Before joining the venture world, Jake co-founded Humin (Acq. Tinder/IAC), a consumer mobile software company where he focused on building the engineering team, product distribution, and new market expansion/partnerships. Jake also co-founded the Kairos Society, the largest and most recognized global network of entrepreneurs under the age of 25, where he sits on the Board of Directors. While in college, he founded Solé Bicycle Company and grew it into an industry leader. Jake serves as an adviser to numerous start-ups including Hired and Rubicon Global.

Jake received a degree in Entrepreneurship from the USC Marshall School of Business where he frequently lectures on entrepreneurship and technology.

Kimmy Scotti

Kimmy Scotti is a member of the investment team focusing on IT investments and Founder of the women’s health and wellness company Monthly Gift. Prior to 8VC, Ms. Scotti served as the Executive Director of Business Development & Operations at Loeb Enterprises where she co-founded Script Relief, a direct-to-consumer healthcare company that has helped over 10 million Americans afford their prescription medications. She also serves as the Executive Chairman of The RunThrough, the international, digital showroom connecting established and emerging designers to the fashion press.

Prior to graduating from The Fashion Institute of Technology, she created Mimz New York, a fashion jewelry line that was sold at Bloomingdales and featured on the hit show, “Project Runway”. She is a member of New York Angels, an advisor to the CFDA Incubator, an advisor to Cornell Tech.

Sir Deryck Maughan

Sir Deryck Maughan is a Board Partner at 8VC. He also serves as a Director, Member of the Executive Committee and Chairman of the Risk Committee of BlackRock. Sir Deryck was Senior Independent Director of GlaxoSmithKline until May 2016. He is a former Director of Thomson Reuters and Travelers Inc. Sir Deryck has also served as Vice Chairman of the New York Stock Exchange and as a member of the Investor Advisory Committee of the New York Federal Reserve Bank.

Sir Deryck is a Trustee of the British Museum, appointed by the Prime Minister. He is a former Trustee of Lincoln Center, Carnegie Hall and New York University Langone Medical Center. He has also served on the Dean’s Advisory Councils of Stanford Graduate School of Business and Harvard Kennedy School of Government.

Sir Deryck is a former Partner of Kohlberg Kravis & Roberts (2005 to 2014). He led the firm’s global financial services investment team and served as Chairman of KKR Asia, establishing the firm’s presence in Asia and raising an inaugural $4 billion Asia Fund.

Sir Deryck was Vice Chairman of Citigroup and CEO of Citigroup International from 1998 to 2004, a business operating in more than 100 countries, with assets of $450 billion and accounting for more than half the earnings of Citigroup.

Sir Deryck was appointed Chairman and CEO of Salomon Brothers by Warren Buffet in 1992, leading the firm’s successful recovery from crisis and orchestrating its sale in 1997 to Travelers Group. From 1986 to 1991 he lived in Japan as Chairman and CEO of Salomon Brothers Asia.

Sir Deryck served as a Principal in Her Majesty’s Treasury from 1969 to 1979, advising Ministers on macro-economic policy and international monetary affairs. He was a member of Goldman Sachs from 1979 to 1983.

Sir Deryck is a Harkness Fellow and a graduate of King’s College London and the Graduate School of Business, Stanford University. The Maughan Library of King’s College is named in recognition of the family’s support of the College.

Brett Cummings

Brett Cummings is Chief Operating Officer and Chief Financial Officer.

Prior to joining 8VC, Brett was CFO of Formation 8. Brett spent five years as CFO at CMEA Capital. At CMEA, Brett managed over 75 portfolio companies across six funds with $1.2 billion in assets under management. Previously, Brett was on the Audit and Business Advisory Services team at PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) in New York and San Francisco. In his role with PwC, Brett supervised and trained audit team members and worked with multiple insurance and investment management clients, including: Swiss Re, California State Automobile Association (CSAA), Esurance, Stanford Endowment Fund, UCSF Endowment Fund, and Franklin Templeton Investments.

Brett received dual degrees in Finance and Accounting from the Kelley School of Business at Indiana University. Brett earned his CPA in 2006 and is a member of the AICPA, California CPA Society, and the Silicon Valley Bank NextGen Advisory Board.

Jin-Young Kim

Jin-Young Kim leads the firm’s fundraising and investor relations strategy and helps manage firm operations.

Prior to 8VC, Jin-Young was an early team member at Formation 8.  Previously, Jin-Young worked at General Atlantic, a global growth equity firm, where she focused on investment opportunities in enterprise technology. Prior to GA, Jin-Young began her career in technology investment banking at Morgan Stanley.

Jin-Young received a B.A. in English Literature from Amherst College and an M.B.A. from The Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania with concentrations in Entrepreneurial Management, Marketing and Operations.

Stacey Olson

Stacey Olson

Director of Finance

Stacey Olson is Director of Finance; she specializes in portfolio management, financial analysis and international entity structuring and management.

Stacey has a broad range of experience working with both regional and multi-national financial institutions. Prior to Formation 8, Stacey worked in PwC’s Asset Management Practice based in both San Francisco and Hong Kong. Stacey has extensive knowledge and experience working with Advisors, Managers, Hedge Fund, Private Equity and Venture Capital organizations across a diverse range of asset classes.

Stacey received a B.S. in Business Administration with a concentration in Accounting from Sonoma State University. She earned her CPA and is a member of the AICPA.

Jack Rothacher

Prior to joining 8VC, Jack spent three years as Finance Senior Manager at Sequoia Capital. At Sequoia, Jack managed financial reporting and operations for funds across the U.S., China, India and Israel. During his time at Sequoia, Jack was also responsible for driving the implementation of new accounting and financial reporting software. Previously, Jack was part of the Deloitte audit practice in San Francisco where he focused on investment management, clean technology and renewable energy clients.

Jack received his M.B.A. from Western Governors University and he graduated magna cum laude with a B.S. in Business Administration with a concentration in Accounting from the University of Arizona. Jack is a CPA and has passed level I of the CFA program.

Caroline Graham

Director of Operations

Caroline Graham is Director of Operations for 8VC.

Prior to 8VC, Caroline managed operations for Formation 8. Prior to Formation 8, she worked at Highbridge Capital, in New York, as a Client Services professional specializing in loan focused funds. Caroline began her career at San Francisco based hedge fund, PFM, L.P. as a research assistant focused on the Healthcare sector.

Caroline received her B.S. in Business Administration with a concentration in Finance from The University of the Pacific.

Robin Kaufman

Robin Kaufman

Director of Executive Office

Robin is the Director of Joe’s Executive Office.  She started working for him as his Executive Assistant at Addepar in 2011, but spends the majority of her time at 8VC and on the logistical operations of his daily life and travels. Robin has been supporting C-Level executives in various industries for over ten years, at such companies at Hotel Nikko, The Pacific Maritime Association, All Nippon Airlines, and Sumitomo-Mitsui Banking Corporation.

Her philanthropy work involves helping alleviate local hunger issues at the San Francisco Food Bank.

Robin received her B.A. from UCLA in Japanese Language and Linguistics.

Deny Khoung

Deny Khoung

Designer-in-Residence

Deny is Designer-in-Residence at 8VC and focuses on adding value to our companies through design mentorship, hiring, product feedback, and being a conduit to help teams overcome design challenges.

Deny is the founder of Whitespace, a startup-focused company helping early stage teams build up their designers and design teams. Prior to 8VC, he was Creative Director at Zanbato, a fintech company focused on bringing efficiency to private capital markets. Deny serves as a design advisor to startups including Affinity Technologies and Anduin Transactions. He is also a mentor at Boomtown Accelerator and an alum of Techstars, a global startup accelerator.

Deny has a BFA in Graphic Design and BFA in Photography from San Jose State University where he also served as an adjunct design lecturer.

Luke Bugbee

Luke is a Designer at 8VC. His role is to utilize bold and compelling design to ensure 8VC’s standing as a thought leader in the industry.

Prior to 8VC Luke was a designer for Persista, a startup using artificial intelligence to target some of enterprise employee’s biggest headaches. Before that Luke spent 2 years as a designer for OpenGov, an 8VC and Andreessen Horowitz portfolio company which is the leading cloud-based financial analysis platform for governments.

Luke is also an accomplished artist. His work has been featured by Lululemon Athletica, Adobe’s Inspire Magazine and Grafik Design Academy’s yearly magazine. He has produced some of the most virally shared artwork ever to reach the front page of Reddit and Abduzeedo.

Luke holds a B.S. in Business Marketing from The Master’s University.

Reid Spitz

Reid Spitz

Investment Team

Reid works on the investment team at 8VC. He was previously on Joe Lonsdale’s investment team at Formation 8. Prior to joining Formation 8, Reid did a Master’s degree in Philosophy at Stanford, where he specialized in the history of philosophy, metaethics, and value theory. He also received his Bachelor’s degree from Stanford in Symbolic Systems. Reid has worked in a number of capacities at startups, from sales to marketing to front-end web development. He believes that the best companies create not only new products for the world, but also new values.

Francisco Gimenez

Francisco Gimenez

Principal

Francisco Gimenez is the Resident Data Scientist at 8VC where he focuses on helping portfolio companies strategize, prototype, and recruit for data science teams.

Francisco is also the founder of Catenus Science, a data science consulting and recruiting firm that uses an apprenticeship model to help early stage companies build data science teams.

Francisco received his Ph.D. from Stanford in Biomedical Informatics, where he was a Ruth L. Kirchstein Fellow. Prior to that he got his B.S. in Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences from UC Berkeley.

Maria Rioumine

Investment Team

Maria is an associate on the investment team at 8VC. Before joining 8VC, Maria worked at Goldman Sachs in the Investment Banking team in London, where she focused on M&A and financing transactions in the consumer and healthcare industries. Prior to Goldman Sachs, Maria worked at AirAsia’s Business Development division in Indonesia and Malaysia. She also served as an advisor to a number of nonprofit organizations in Pakistan and Southeast Asia, focusing on education initiatives.

Maria graduated from the University of Oxford, where she was President of the Oxford Union, with a degree in Philosophy, Politics and Economics. She grew up in Russia and in Israel, and is working on assimilating to American culture.

Andrew Camel

Andrew is an associate on the investment team at 8VC. Prior to 8VC, Andrew worked at Sherpa Capital, a venture capital firm focused on investments in early-stage technology companies. Before joining Sherpa, Andrew worked at General Atlantic, a global growth equity firm, where he focused on investment opportunities in enterprise technology. Before his time at GA, Andrew also spent 5 years as an engineer working on a variety of enterprise software projects.

Leandra Sivess

Leandra Sivess works with Jin-Young Kim on the back end strategy for investor relations.

Leandra has a diverse background having worked in hospitality, sales, office and operations management, as well as supporting C-Level executives within the Private Equity Industry.

Leandra is a graduate from Colorado State University where she received her B.S. in Health and Exercise Science with a concentration in Sports Medicine.

Prior to 8 partners, Allie worked for RD&SM Holdings in Australia where she managed the day to day operations for several starts ups. Allie began her career with Greystone Hotels as a Hotel Sales Manager in San Diego.

Kacey works with Caroline Graham in assisting operations for 8VC.

Kacey started her career in social work, then transitioned into sales/marketing for an insurance company for CPAs and most recently worked in tech sales.

Kacey is a graduate from Notre Dame de Namur University where she received her B.S. in Sociology and Psychology with a concentration in Criminal Justice.

Yelena Gruzman

Yelena Gruzman is Senior Accountant.

Prior to joining 8VC, she worked at a real estate investment firm in a project accounting role.  She began her career in accounting as an auditor for a CPA firm, which specialized in audits of employee benefit plans, before moving to a non-profit organization focusing on providing elementary school education for low income students in underserved neighborhoods.

Yelena graduated from University of California, Santa Cruz with a Bachelor of Arts in Business Management Economics with a concentration in Accounting.

Clay Spence

Philosopher-in-Residence

Clay works on writing, editorial, and research projects at 8VC. His work is multidisciplinary, ranging from diligence on specific industries and macroeconomic forecasting to humanistic pursuits in history, politics, and ethical philosophy. He works on exploring the relationship between the microcosm of Silicon Valley and the wider social landscapes of culture, government, and markets. Prior to joining 8VC, Clay completed a Philosophy, Politics, and Economics major at Claremont McKenna, where he specialized in population ethics and Baruch Spinoza. His particular interests include the history of finance, evolutionary biology, and contemporary political theory.

Lauren Devereux

Lauren Devereux

Chief of Staff to Kimmy Scotti

Lauren serves as the chief of staff to Kimmy Scotti. She has previously worked in a number of capacities at startups, from marketing and strategy to operations and merchandising, in such diverse industries as commerce, software, and content syndication. She most recently was the Marketing Manager at Spring.

She holds a B.A. in Communications and Business from Loyola Marymount University and is based in Brooklyn, New York. She believes that companies do best by doing good.

Allison Pavlick

Allison Pavlick works with Jin-Young Kim in managing 8VC’s fundraising and investor relations strategy.

Prior to her time at 8VC, Allison worked in investor relations and business development at The Blackstone Group, one of the world’s leading investment firms. Previously, she focused on corporate development and internal strategy at Bloomberg. Allison began her career in investment banking at Merrill Lynch, where she specialized in the consumer staples sector.

Allison is a graduate from Penn State University, where she received her bachelor’s degree in finance.
